Breonna Taylor Mural in Annapolis
Mural information:
This Mural was painted in July of 2020 by multiple art and culture groups, like to bring attention to police brutality. One of the groups stated “it effort is not intended to be a performative distraction from real from real policy changes, rather a form of using peaceful and artistic means to express distress, giving a voice to those who need to be heard and to have their humanity recognized.” This mural was painted in honor of Breonna Taylor an African American women who was unjustly shot 8 times in her apartment by the police. Along with Breonna’s portrait the phrase, “Black lives matter” is printed below her as a reminder o all who view it. This mural can be found on the basketball court of Chambers Park in Annapolis Maryland.
Who Breonna Taylor was:
Breonna Taylor was a 26 year old medical technician from Louisville, Kentucky. She was killed on March 13, 2020 by Louisville police officers during the execution of a search warrant. Taylor, although no longer associating with the man, was on and off with a known drug dealer for years, which gave police reason to believe he was having drugs delivered to her apartment. Despite Taylor no longer being in contact with the dealer, and his residence being far from her apartment the judge still issued a warrant for the search of her apartment. They were first given a “no-knock” warrant meaning they could enter the apartment without announcing themselves, but before the raid it was changed to a “knock and announce, meaning they had to identify themselves. On the evening of March 13, the police entered into her apartment, and her current boyfriend, believing it was her ex boyfriend trying to break in after hearing no answer when they questioned who was at the door, fired at the officers striking one in the thigh. This caused the officers to fire ten rounds blindly into the apartment shooting Breonna five times. After they were done firing the officers proceeded to attend only to their colleagues wound. The officers did not even register that she was seriously wounded until 5 minutes later when her boyfriend made a 911 call, and even then she didn’t receive medical attention for more than twenty minutes after she was shot. |
